The lidded boxes are based on a variety of references: ancient Chinese bronzes; artifacts from medieval torture museums; germinating plants forms. Construction of the earthenware ceramic boxes involves a variety of techniques: throwing, extruding, and hand-building. Surface finishes result from the layering of a variety of compounds such as terra sigillatas, stains, woodash engobes, and glazes, and from multiple firings.
